We have recently removed the light fittings from our lounge (ceiling and wall) and have noticed that we only have two wires - no earth wire. If not the lighting circuit has been run in non standard cable which would also mean it needs re wiring. I have just bought a nice new light fitting for a bathroom (it is the appropriate bathroom zone). I notice it only has two terminals (does not have an earth terminal). This is presumable made for fittings to work of a junction box with only the switch (live) and neutral going to the fitting.

Even the presence of modern TE cable at a switch or light fitting does not guarantee the whole circuit has an earth , since it may have been used to extend the circuit in the past. Safety Generally Metal faced switches switches must not be used on an unearthed lighting circuit. The fitting been classII would not require an earth , what makes me uneasy about this is the fact that the metal mounting bracket would not be affording double insulation against your connecting wirescoming through the ceiling, the fitting integral wiring will have layers of insulation afforded to it thus not needed earthing but it depends if your fitting mounts to that ceiling bracket with. Some of the guidance stipulates when inspecting that non earthed metal lamp fittings can have a judgement call if away from extraneously conductive parts.
Because the fittings originally held MR(low voltage and mains isolated) lamps, the fittings have no provision for connecting an earth wire. The new GUlamp holders have live and neutral wires only - no earth. To explain a little further, I removed the glass shades from the wall lights to decorate around the light fittings , and it was then that I saw there was no earth wire connected to the earth connection screw on the metal light fitting. I can see the wiring in the wall as the new lights were fitted slightly lower than the originals so there is a hole above the new fitting which needs to be made.
Wire a 4mm earth wire to the fitting from a known earth to the appliance. This can mean going from the board or from something like the socket circuit. You can fit a joint box onto the socket cable bare the wires back for the earth conductor (power off etc of course) and then run a 4mm earth wire from the socket cables earth.
